Serve Hits a Net Post or Singles Stick
by Kathy

Q: A serve that hits the net cord and goes into the service box is a let. But I read that it is a fault if it hits the net post and goes into the service box. Yet during play, if the ball touches the net or net post before it falls into the correct court it is a good ball. Why is the net post treated as part of the court for one and not the other? Or is this just an example of "it is what it is?"

A: It's a matter of angles. A serve would NOT have any chance to go into the service box if it had continued on it's trajectory, going over, but not hitting the net post (or singles stick). During a rally, a ball hit from outside the sideline COULD go into the court if it passes over, but doesn't hit the net post or a singles stick.
